PURPOSE/ROLE
Each month, surgical pathology cases illustrating the practical application of diagnostic electron microscopy are presented on the society website (access any of the yearly buttons on the right). These are cases that emphasize the role of electron microscopy in the diagnosis of human diseases. Cases that also emphasize the correlation of electron microscopy with ancillary studies, rare cases and unusual cases are also welcomed.

The cases may be ones reflecting diagnostic problems from surgical pathology, renal pathology, neuropathology, dermatopathology, cytopathology or any of the other specialty services.

Remember that posting of a case is an opportunity to highlight services provided by your institution and that some electron microscopy units and pathology departments are using the cases-of-the-month for resident teaching.

CASE MATERIAL PREPARATION
The format is designed so that your preparation time will be minimal. In most cases, you will have both light and electron micrographs available. We will scan these for you and provide the layout of the web pages. For these instructions and additional information especially relating to digitized images, see "Print a Copy of Instructions" in the Table of Contents.

Material requirements:
A.
Text. Make short and concise; include brief introduction, summary of clinical history, short description of light and electron microscopy (highlighting problems encountered by the former and the key ultrastructural aspects that assisted in resolving the problem), diagnosis, discussion pertinent to the problem, a few main references, tables, figures and figure legends.

B. References. Since the cases have teaching value, provide a few of the main references central to the topic.

C. Tables. Number consecutively with Arabic numerals. Each table should have a descriptive title and the table should be referenced in the text.

D. Figures. Select 3 to 4 of the 35 mm kodachromes, along with 2 to 3 of the key electron micrographs for the figures. The electron micrographs can be submitted as prints or the original negatives for digitization. The scanning of these images will be provided by the webmasters. Figures that are to be scanned should not exceed 8.5 by 11.0 inches. A set of concise figure legends emphasizing the key ultrastructural features should be provided. If you wish arrows or other legends applied to the micrographs, please indicate their preferred location.

E. Diagnosis. The final diagnosis should be provided.

F. Comments/Discussion. Provide a brief comment detailing the role of electron microscopy in resolving the specific problem (remember that such cases serve an educational role for residents, pathologists and clinicians) and referencing the main citations.

For additonal and more detailed information, see "Print a Copy of Instructions" below.

AUTHOR PROOFING
After creating the web pages from the materials submitted, the HTML version will be posted on the Society's server at a temporary location for proofing by the author(s). Authors will be sent instructions for viewing and proofreading the HTML version of the submitted text and images one week prior to the publication of the material on the Society's website.
