ULTRAPATH VIII

August 4 - 8 1996

Contributed by Elba and Guillermo Herrera - Shreveport, Louisiana

In February, Elba and I visited Oaxaca, Mexico, to explore whether Oaxaca would he a good site for Ultrapath VIII. Hugo Dominguez and his wife, Yolanda, were very excited about Oaxaca and jubilant to share their excitement with us. They had already done a great part of the groundwork and consequently our excursion was a lot easier. We met with Yolanda and Hugo in Mexico City. Mexico City is a vibrant metropolis with many things to do. it was obvious that if the meeting was to be held in Oaxaca, a few days in Mexico City before or after the meeting had to be incorporated into the agenda as an option. We fondly remembered Ultrapath IV in 1988 in Norway and how pleasant it was for the group to travel together by bus from Oslo to Ullensvang. We thought that a similar scenario would start Ultrapath VIII in the right path. Even the experienced traveler will find Mexico City an impressive city. It is the most highly populated metropolis in the world. Its parks and plazas, unusual architecture decorated with the work of notable Mexican artists, lovely colonial mansions, palaces and easy commercial transportation system (metro) or inexpensive taxi service make a stop in Mexico City a serious consideration for those attending tile meeting in Oaxaca. Places to visit must include the Zocalo, the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Museo del Temple Mayor and Chapultepec Park. The National Museum of Anthropology exhibits a wealth of pre-Colombian art and is by itself worth a stop in the capital. Just be aware of the altitude - 7040 feet - which means that for a day or two you should move more slowly and go easy on the Margaritas, Tecates and Coronas. The driving time from Mexico City to Oaxaca is approximately four to five hours and about midway is Puebla, another fascinating city. We are planning a stop in Puebla for lunch en route to Oaxaca

A tasty Mexican dish: Bacalao navideño

Puebla has just been designated as a World Historical city. A couple of hours in Puebla will allow some extra time far touring the downtown area. Once in Oaxaca, a superb scientific meeting coupled to a vibrant social program awaits you. The social activities will include a cocktail party upon arrival to the hotel, a visit to Monte Alban ruins, a gala dinner and ample time to explore the charming city.Oaxaca is famous for its history, nearby ancient ruins such as Monte Alban (fifteen minutes from the center of the city and Mitla (fifty minutes from Oaxaca), architectural motifs and superb art.

Museo del Palacio de las Bellas Artes

The Hotel Victoria will be the site for the meeting and is located on at hill overlooking Oaxaca. It is approximately a fifteen minute walk to downtown. The hotel offers transportation to and from the downtown area. Accommodations are excellent, with modern facilities and rooms that vary from single rooms to suites that will accommodate an entire family. The hotel has been recently remodeled. The pool and surrounding gardens are gorgeous. The conference room is well equipped, extremely comfortable and also overlooks the city. Breakfasts and two luncheons will be included within the registration fee for the participants. The theme of the conference will be: "Electron Microscopy in 1996: Recapitulating What We Have Accomplished and Preparing for the Challenges of the Future". Electron microscopy remains very much alive and it is in these meetings that we can refuel to deal with current and upcoming challenges. Emphasis ill the sessions will be placed in how electron microscopy competes favorably with other techniques id the diagnostic, teaching and research arenas and how we can convey this message to our colleagues.

Yolanda, Hugo, Elba and I are convinced that Oaxaca offers the perfect setting for Ultrapath 1996. Yolanda and Hugo will be our hosts and their uncompromising attention to detail will be a guarantee to the success of this meeting. We invite all of you to join us next year, August 4-9, in Oaxaca, Mexico for a fun, exciting and scientifically stimulating experience. You do not want to miss Ultrapath VIII! You will regret it!

Estado Oaxaca is number 20
