INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS - CASE-OF-THE-MONTH SECTION
The format is designed so that your preparation time will be minimal. In most cases, you will have both light and electron micrographs available. We will scan these for you and provide the layout of the web pages.
Material requirements:
A. Text. Make short and concise; include
brief introduction, summary of clinical history, short
description of light and electron microscopy (highlighting
problems encountered by the former and the key ultrastructural
aspects that assisted in resolving the problem), diagnosis,
discussion pertinent to the problem, a few main references,
tables, figures and figure legends.
B. References. Since the cases have teaching value, provide a few of the main references central to the topic. Follow the American Medcal Association Manual of Style for reference style. Number in the order cited; place Arabic numerals within brackets for text citation.
C. Tables. Number consecutively with Arabic numerals. Each table should have a descriptive title and the table should be referenced in the text.
D. Figures. Select 3 to 4 of the 35 mm kodachromes, along with 2 to 3 of the key electron micrographs for the figures. The electron micrographs can be submitted as prints or the original negatives for digitization. The scanning of these images will be provided by the webmasters. Figures that are to be scanned should not exceed 8.5 by 11.0 inches. A set of concise figure legends emphasizing the key ultrastructural features should be provided. If you wish arrows or other legends applied to the micrographs, please indicate their preferred location.
If you are submitting digital images, two sets of these images should be submitted. One set of digital images should be in JPG file format and the size of the image should not exceed 480 X 500 (width x height) pixels. The second set of images are thumbnail images that are used as icons for the JPG images. The thumbnail images are GIF format and each should measure 100 x 80 pixels.
E. Diagnosis. The final diagnosis should be provided.
F. Comments/Discussion. Provide a brief comment detailing the role of electron microscopy in resolving the specific problem (remember that such cases serve an educational role for residents, pathologists and clinicians) and referencing the main citations.
Submission:
There are two ways to submit your material. Snail mail can be
used for images and text. Special arrangements can be made for
electronic submission of your material by attaching files and
images to an e-mail. If you require assistance contact one of the
webmasters.
Electronic submission of text is preferred and the following formats are supported: ASCII (Plain Text), Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, Word Perfect, RTF and HTML. These files can be on disks (3.5 ", Zip Disk) formatted using either the MAC OS or an IBM (PC) OS.
Submission of the original electron micrograph (either as prints or negatives) and other illustrations via snail mail to Irv Dardick (see below) is the preferred method for submitting images. These will be scanned and the original slides, negatives and prints returned.
The following information about the author who will handle correspondence and be responsible for proof reading the material should be included with your submission: Name, Address, Telephone Number, Fax Number, email address.
