Minutes of the General Business Meeting

Oaxaca, Mexico - August 6, 1996

Attendance: Fifty-two attendees were present at the business meeting. Dick Dickersin (President) presided over the meeting.

Old Business: The symposium to be published in Human Pathology is being organized by Guillermo Herrera. The overall theme of the symposium is the role of electron microscopy in tumor diagnosis. Various members of the Society For Ultrastructural Pathology (SUP) will be contributing articles for this most important issue. It was the general consensus that the diagnostic expertise that is present collectively among our Society members needs to reach a broader audience than those that read Ultrastructural Pathology.

The SUP has its own Web Site. Karlene Hewan-Lowe has established the Listserver as a forum for rapid communication between members of the SUP. Anyone wishing to become a member of the SUP listserver should e-mail Karlene at khewanl@zappa.ultrakohl.com.

The listserver will be an excellent means by which a member can receive help, for example, as to the best immunohistochemical stain to use in a particular diagnostic setting and lysosomal storage diseases. The Women's College Hospital has been added as a new link to the SUP website. Since this hospital specializes in the ultrastructure of skin lesions, it will provide an important link to members of Society that seek this expertise with problem skin cases.

New Business: Dick Dickersin related the consensus reached at the Executive Council Meeting held on 8/4/96 in Oaxaca, regarding the theme for the SUP Companion Meeting to be held at the next US-Canadian Academy of Pathology Meeting in March, 1997. It was unanimous agreement that the theme should cover the use of immunohistochemistry vs. EM in the diagnosis of specific tumor categories. It was agreed that some of the topics to be covered should include adenocarcinomas, small round cell tumors, hematologic malignancies, CNS tumors and the differential diagnosis of melanomas and other pigmented lesions.

John Shelburne asked that Ashville, North Carolina be considered as the next site for ULTRAPATH IX. This was agreed upon by the majority of the attendees. Other sites that were suggested as possible sites for future ULTRAPATH meetings included Ireland,Delaware, India, Italy and Spain. The question came up again about having the ULTRAPATH meetings every year rather than every other year. It was suggested that perhaps an ULTRAPATH meeting could be held in conjunction with another society's annual meeting. This could potentially increase the awareness of the SUP to other medical disciplines. The possibility of advertising our Society and its activities in various journals was also recommended. This will be discussed by the SUP Executive Council at their next meeting in March.

The Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Jerry Simmons, nominated Bruce Mackay as next President and Bob Erlandson as Vice-President. The following old and new appointments were announced to the general membership:

Adjournment: The meeting ended after 45 minutes. As usual, the discussions continued out into the hallway, into the elevators and over lunch and dinner. What an enthusiastic group!

Secretary, Society for Ultrastructural Pathology
