Introduction:

This case illustrates the use of electron microscopy in the diagnosis of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma.

Clinical History:

The patient was a 40 year old man with a history of smoking who had a right renal mass found incidentally on ultrasound after being investigated for an unrelated condition. After radiologic workup, a right radical nephrectomy was performed.

Gross Description:

The tumour (Figure 1) measured 6.0 x 5.5 x 4.0 cm and was well circumscribed, solid, with a soft yellow to beige colour and focally hemorrhagic. The tumour appeared to abut upon but not infiltrate the renal vein, and closely approached the anterior capsular surface.
