Papanicalou stained smears of the fine needle asporate from the right breast tumor demonstrated groups of malignant, mucous secreting cells..
A diagnosis of colloid carcinoma was rendered

The cut surface of the breast carcinoma was white and gelatinous. Sparse regions of grey white necrosis were present.

Groups of neoplastic cells were associated with large pools of extracellular mucin.
Intracellular and extracellular mucin was demosntrated with the histochemical stains for mucin, PAS (Periodic Acid Schiff) and Alcian Blue.

The tumor had an infiltrating growth pattern and perineural growth was seen.
