The initial biopsy and the subsequent curettings from the lytic lesion in the mandible were light microscopically similar.

A variety of inflammatory cells are admixed with pale staining cells.

The Langerhan's cells (arrows) have grooved nuclei and pale staining eosinophilic cytoplasm. Inflammatory cells with dark nuclei consist of lymphocytes and rare plasma cells as well as eosinophils.

The pale staining cells with grooved nuclei (Fig 2) stained positive for S-100 protein.
