Microscopic examination of the biopsy showed a moderately cellular fibrillar neoplasm with modest nuclear pleomorphism and an absence of mitotic figures. The atypical cells composing the mass contained abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and eccentrically-placed nuclei (Figures 1,2). Neither vascular proliferation nor coagulative tumor necrosis were present. Immunohistochemical studies with antibodies to GFA protein showed strong immunoreactivity within the neoplastic cells (Figure 3). A diagnosis of anaplastic astrocytoma with gemistocytic features was made.
